The only tip I would offer is to not bother breeding your own mice. For just a couple of snakes it is easier and cheaper to buy frozen mice.

Unless you enjoy mice....I watch my mice running around in the racks as much as I look at my snakes.

It will all depend on WHY you want to breed. If you are looking to make money, there are easier ways than breeding kenyans. If you want to do it for fun, its great.

I agree with the earlier post. Mice/Rats production is a boom and bust cycle. Mice/Rats are also fun to raise themselves, but A LOT of work. Fun though.

I keep a colony of around 50 sand boas. I also have in the neighborhood of 200 mice and 40 rats to keep them up and going. I produce more than I need, and turn around and sell the excess to pet stores. The excess mice/rats helps pay for the rodent feed and bedding. I spend about an hour a day working with the rodents. Some days more.

if i have many snakes it would be way better...
what about feeding babies ?

SandBoaMorphs Nov 23, 2010 11:22 AM

If you want to breed then you need to either grow your own mice for the pinkies or you'll need to make sure you have a regular supplier. The babies eat pinkies at birth. Some will readily accept frozen thawed...some will not...I have yet to figure out why some will and some won't. If you do, you can make a killing!

yeah
i dont think it would cost much to breed mice when food is a dollar a pound.
im selling a male fire ball python and a male eastern boxie to pay for it, i think i wanna get a anery male albino male and normal females.

SandBoaMorphs Nov 23, 2010 01:54 PM

So you can breed litters of normals het anery or albino? That makes no sense, at least get normal females het anery and albino so you get get all three morphs in a breeding.

breed the anery to some females then the albino to some.

>>if i have many snakes it would be way better...
>>what about feeding babies ?

I have bred mice when I had 20-30 snakes and have just bought frozen mice with the same size colony.

What I found was that breeding mice is boom and bust. You either have hundreds of babies born in a week or you have none. So if you need babies/fuzzies/hoppers I found myself freezing the extras when I had them to get me through times when I didn't have enough. That's when I realized it was a lot less time intensive to just buy them frozen.

Before you set up your mouse colony, figure out how many of each sized mouse you will need per week (or month). Then figure out how many breeding females you will need to produce that many and how long you will have to raise the offspring to get them up to the appropriate size. It is tough to balance the number and size you need when you need them. For example, it can be tough to have small pinkies every week for a few weeks when your snake's babies are born.

That said, I love breeding mice and if I had room, I would certainly be doing it just for the fun of it. It isn't an efficient way to feed a snake colony, but it is fun.
