you guys have a strage way to keep lizards. don´t you think the enclosue is to small, to less lighting, no real structure for climbing, real hiding aso. . poor guy.

livinginvestment Nov 28, 2010 08:05 AM

No. During the summer, there will be an outside pen. No, there is a uvb fluorescent bulb and a 160 watt uvb bulb. Replicates winter in baja pretty well. I ckecked the current temps there. This guy had hides but doesn't use them. Hope that's ok with you. I heard your complaints but no suggestions. Please share.

What is are those wooden boards stacked on each others? Is that what I think it is? I don't really use those, though. I don't think it's necessary and it looks kindda tacky if you ask me.

livinginvestment Nov 28, 2010 08:08 AM

Ill switch it out with 100 lbs boulders when he complains. Thanks

I didn't say anything about boulder.... [chuckle] I never find it necessary to use them, and I still have perfectly fine specimens in excellent condition.

livinginvestment Nov 28, 2010 08:34 AM

lol...what do you use? Please share.

Jeez guys, give the guy a BreaK!

Hello,
You would need to have the UVB light positioned right above where the iguana is going to bask which is right next to the heat lamp or it will be ineffective and she can develop metabolic bone disease from lack of UVB. I would also move the structure to the far left of the cage so she has more room to move around under the light.
Hope that helps,

Manny

LOL...I find it entertaining. I do become disappointed when people voice their opinions on things they dont agree with but fail to offer a solution or ask questions to better understand.

This is a winter home for this guy. The wooden structure was used for my kimberly monitors. Really, how could this hurt him? lol The ambient temp during the day in the cage is around 80 degrees. The temps under the vapor bulb is over 110 degrees - temp gun to the rock. It's a 160 watt UVB mercury vapor bulb to boot. He is puppy dog tame and wanders very little. I watch him (un-noticed by him) for hours. He basks, eats, regulates by climbing up above the bulb and then climbs back to re-heat. Does this all day. I have yet to seem him dig, or hide, even at night. Bold as he is calm.

Now, with sun permitting, he will be taken outside into a 8' x 8' portable vinyl coated wire mesh pen with all the UBV rays sunny So Cal can offer. Wooden hide boxes, cinder blocks for climbing and chair for me.

For the 3 - 4 months during winter, do you think that this set up is detrimental to him and the others I plan to raise? If so, please tell me why? do you have facts instead of your personal preferences? Would love to hear them. I am just dying to turn my garage into another snake room.

FYI, I got most of my set up planing from West Coast Iguana's website.

Thanks,

Kenny

The problem is the GOOGLE-generation LOL they never read anything from start to finish and think that they know it all just by reading a few bits of the sites with most hits...LOL.. thats why they realy cant add anything to you..
Honestly there was a documentary on this! on swedish TV =P

Extreemosaurus Nov 30, 2010 04:17 AM

i have had reptiles for 20years
i have 5 rhinos 2cubans 1 grandcayman blue 13 sailfins 2C,similis 2Aus WD i prob forgtot to list some LOL

I cant realy see anything realy wrong with your setup.. especially if you have an outdoor cage for the summer...
Sure its prob not the best cage for breeding or doesnt look like the bahamas.. but it works fine

livinginvestment Nov 30, 2010 09:10 AM

Thank you both. Life's about live and learn. Trying new things and taking calculated risks. I understand many of you put a lot of money, time and thought into your housing and care of your reptiles. I'm sure what seems to be too simple of an a set up might be insulting to you and reflect my utter disregard for the animals. Trust me, it's not the case and sometimes you have to get beyond your emotions and see things as they really are.

Not everyone has the space or means for such elaborate setups. Does that mean that everyone cannot keep these and other wonderful animals? I think it is in the best interest for everyone that we try to share as much as we know to spread the appreciation of these animals to better the chances of their survival....and your business profits. Isn't that why we have open forums? I mean sure, it's a nice place to gloat and banter, but isnt sharing and learning the main reason?

So I asked for input. Like I said, I'm dying to turn my garage into another snake room. If I need 3-4 Vapor bulbs hanging from the ceiling during the winter, tell me why or why not and maybe it will save someone from investing into something that he/she cant afford or maybe open the door to some who once thought they could not properly care for one.

Any hoot...I do appreciate all the responses. I am still looking for a female should anyone dare sell me one with all that you have read and seen.

Thanks,

Kenny
