I NEED URGENT ADVICE!!!

xstraykitten Nov 23, 2010 11:47 AM

I purchased a savannah monitor from Petco because the poor thing was in terrible condition, skinny, dehydrated, the works. So I figured I'd try and save her or at least make her more comfortable in her last days because I did believe she was going to die.

She improved greatly during this past week I've had her, fattened up, because 100% more active, then suddenly this morning I wak up and find she's laid 7 eggs!

I have no idea what to do with them. I'm not sure if they are even good eggs or not. They are nice and white and hav hard shells, but I don't know how to incubate them at all... if they are even live eggs?

Plus the monitor has now spiraled downwards. Her tail is thin as a rail, she's barely moving, she didn't even fuss a bit when I lifted her off her eggs.

ANY ADVICE?

Sorry about the terrible spelling and wrong words and whatnot, I am just so frazzled.

Her laying out in the open, not in a deep burrow is not a good sign. Likely it was a last ditch effort to save her tortured body. Go to the monitor forum. Get her checked by a herp vet. Heat her and hydrate her. Good luck.

the best advice i can give u is to make a homemade incubator out of a ten gallon tank,u can cover the lid with saran wrap or plexiglass just buy a dome light with a 50 watt heat bulb from the pet store,u also need a digital thermometer and a plastic deli cup for the eggs or tuppaware will work fine go to home depot and get a bag of perlite in the lawn and garden center put perlite in deli cup and put eggs on top dont turn eggs upside down or sideways incubate them for about 55 days at constant 88 degrees. You can google all this on monitor care and incubating eggs also. Worse comes to worse text me @ 443-994-5796 Keith

Yes, keeping it warm will allow it best to deal with what is going on. Hydration is the next immediate concern. Provided it hasn't/doesn't vomit, I would stomach tube it some pedialyte (83F). Start with small amounts; on an adult savanna I'd probably start with 50-80mls. If no signs of distress or regurgitation than after 2-4 hours give another dose. The next morning, move up to 125mls, every 12 hours.

This is not veterinary advice. I would actually forgo all of it, and take the savanna to a good herp vet; but in case this isn't a reasonable option, there you go.
