Building a 3 acre Thamnophis habitat

dekaybrown Nov 24, 2010 01:48 PM

The project has begun, construction of a 3 acre habitat with meadowland, a frog pond and brumation site.

It is a very labor intensive and expensive undertaking, but worth it to me in many ways.

The core of my habitat is 350 feet deep X 200 feet wide not counting the embankments and den.

Phase one, removal of some trees.

looking down on it from the hillside..

A shot of the crew at work..

the next step will be stump removal and excavating a large deep pond..

I will also be leveling the ground surrounding the pond and planting grass & blue spruce trees.

The area in the blue circle represents the pond.

Look how wet the ground is already, and we have not even dug down yet.

working on the stumps today..

The concept that my pond will be completed and ready for the 2011 amphibian season has me stoked.

Sure the local Thamnophis are stoked too!

That's a fantastic project, especially since you intend it to benefit primarily garter snakes (of course many other species will benefit as well). Very impressive indeed!

Thanks.

I waited until the weather turned to make sure that the snakes were already in the dens and out of the way to minimize the impact on them during construction.

I'm sure the local water snakes, milks, rat snakes and others will appreciate the abundance of "safe haven" the area will offer.

It borders state forest as well.

Hi Wayne,

This is a great project, congrats on doing a great thing for herps, mammals (and fish !). Let the forum know when you are finished up.
