Freeze alerts via email

time_lord Nov 24, 2010 06:09 PM

I hibernate my torts outside in a hibernaculum. I keep en eye on the weather via my iphone and am always on the watch for days when sub 32 degrees are forecast. (not too often where I live in the Santa Cruz mountains)

That said, we almost dipped down last night, much sooner than I expected. I keep two digital thermometers in the hibernaculum, and both indicate that we never dipped below 36 degrees, so I dodged a bullet that time. (in the event of freezing temps, I bring the box inside)

My question is this: is anyone aware of any service that might send out email alerts when freezing temps are forecast? I think that would be really helpful, in addition to keeping my own eye out for the weather.

To be clear, the purpose of my post is NOT for advice on how to hibernate torts; what I'm looking for is info on any possible weather email alert systems.

Thanks

I would go by the temp at the site of the box. Temps can vary several degrees in your own yard. They make all kinds of gizmo's that are wireless, and can display the temps at a station hundreds of feet away. Try Radio Shack. (dont get the cheepies, they dont last) They record the high/low temps humidity and possabley have one with a warning buzzer. My internet front page has the weather and you can set up a notice of weather temps.of your desire."dont need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" b.dylan HAPPY THANKSGIVING Vic........pics of a few torts. Your local news station may have something. I get daily weather forcasts here as a text message each morning. Weather bug app for your phone may also serve the need. It will give a 7 day forecast as well.
