Jungle Carpet Python rubbing his nose

Midnight777 Nov 28, 2010 06:27 PM

I have had a JCP for 2 months. He's 4 1/2ft long and every now and then, he is rubbing his nose on himself and sometimes the glass. I dont think it can be shedding because he hasnt turned "blue" yet. What could this mean? Does he want more attention?

Hi,
Doesn't look like anyone else has offered any input. I can't say for sure that there isn't anything wrong with this behavior, as I'm no expert, but I can say that my 2 jungle carpets do this sometimes too. It's the same behavior as starting a shed- rubbing the nose and side of the head, but happens outside the shed cycle. I don't understand it but they seem to do it from time to time with no ill effect that I'm aware of.

Great looking snake!

Thx. He is finally going into shed and his dorsal stripe is changing back to brown for some reason.

That is one nice looking JCP I love the stripe.

My JCPs can go blue and clear up in a matter of a couple days and often I miss it because they are in their hides. 2 months without a shed and if you're feeding regularly then it's about due for one. Do you have a moist hide? Good humidity is essential for them to shed properly. Is there anything rough in the enclosure to catch the skin on to remove it?

All my JCPs have branches for perching and they use these for shedding too. It almost sounds like he is trying to do just that.

I do not have a humid hide yet, but I spray the tank and we are working on a fogger/humidifier for the tank.

Here's a picture of his enclosure. Sorry about the quality, my camera's zoom is not working properly.
