Time for another quiz!

chrish Dec 06, 2010 03:34 PM

OK, it's winter in the northern hemisphere so things are a bit slower here. I was scanning some old slides and thought I would see how many of you can identify this snake.

Don't post your guess in the subject line to give others the change to try before they read your answer.

It is not aberrant in any way and it was about 10-12 inches long.

I'll be honest. I didn't know what it was when I flipped it either!

I often read posts here but never reply simply because this ID game is Doug's favorite thing to do as far as I can tell... but, like him, I am completely stumped... keep thinking one of the coachwhips... perhaps Masticophis flagellum... but my only reason for saying that is I can't think of any other possibility.

Think the only hint you could give me that would be of any help is simply to say exactly what it is.

Very good quiz anaimal, hope to hear the answer soon.

Wow, there really isn't much information out there on these guys. Nice find Chris. Rusty-headed Snake - Amastridium veliferum

>>Rusty-headed Snake - Amastridium veliferum

Yeah, I was perplexed when I found it. It looked like some sort of aberrant Diadophis.

This is A. veliferum sapperi, which is sometimes regarded as a different species from the rest of veliferum.

I still cannot find any info on that species. How did you find out what it was?

joecop Dec 11, 2010 06:45 PM

Glad someone got that one. I am with the other guys. Had NO idea what that was and believe me---I tried to find out!! LOL.

I figured it out pretty easily, but kind of cheated...that's why I didn't post it...
