Gator and Gar

lucky13nmp Dec 13, 2010 11:33 PM

i know someone who is getting rid of a gar, which i was told is a florida gar, my gator who is roughly 12 inches is set up in a 75 gallon tank right now, i was thinking about putting the gar in with the gator only because the gar is the same exact size. is this a mistake or should the two be fine, not sure what to do yet so im looking for some insight.

It would be a bad idea one of them will injure if not kill the other or at bare minimum they would stress the hell out of each other

While a 75 gallon tank might be a fine *temporary* set up for either animal, cramming both in there is likely going to end with the fish dying. I used to have a pair of florida gar, about the same size as what you're describing in a 150 gallon, and I still fill like even that wasn't enough. I also know from experience than my gators have all made quick work of whatever fish in with them, even when they were little. (Tried some adult South American, Red Terror cichlids in with one when he was a month old....and he promptly dispatched them for me.)
