Uromastyx- couple of issues

mikemags122 Dec 18, 2010 03:12 PM

I have 2 Uromastyx roughly 10-12" long. They have a hot spot of about 100. I know the tank is too small. They're in a 29 tall. They never came out of their hide so we downsized the tank. Now they come out a bit more often. We THINK one is male the other we THINK is female. They used to get along real well but now the "male" constantly attacks the "female" but leave no visible wounds. Any ideas on the behavior change? Any ideas on what size tank I should upgrade to? All help appreciated!

First thing is, you need to separate them. Second is, you need to provide them larger enclosures (aquariums suck for Uros, BTW), & I'm betting that if the hot spot is a mere 100 degrees, you have some other husbandry issues going on as well.

your enclosure is WAY too small. Minimum.. very minimum should be a 75g tank which measures 48"x18" floor space. You also need a much higher basking temp.. do a google search for 'urowiki' and read everything you can. Your basking temps should be 120F surface temp(measuring with IR temp gun) and ambient needs to be 95F hot end 85F cool end... this just isnt possible to achieve in a small tank like your using now. You should also make sure you have the proper UVB bulbs as well.
