Thinking of getting a blood.....

evansciver Dec 19, 2010 01:48 AM

I've been thinking of getting a blood but had some questions. Are they as tempermental as i've heard? I'm just getting back into snakes and thought Bloods would be a great way to start. Any suggestions?

Wild caught and babies can be very snitty. But there are plenty of wonderful folks offering mellow CBB babies. I have no really evil bloods or short tails here.

I got back into the hobby a few months back and decided to go with bloods. I'm glad I did, and now I have five bloods (brongersmai) and a Sumatran short tail ("black blood" that I picked up yesterday.

All of mine are captive hatched or captive bred and born babies, and while a few of them might be a bit hissy on occasion none of them have snapped or bitten.

They're a great snake, just watch your husbandry with them.

I have to do some more research on them before i really get any. I have a few ball pythons, and I am trying to get into breeding. Gotta start somewhere.

Check out the forums on bloodpythons.com. Great information over there.

Will do thanks. I've heard you can cross breed bloods and balls. Is that true? I've seen things on-line about it. The snakes look beautiful, just dont think theres a big market for hybrids.

They call them super balls, and I'll keep my opinion of hybrids to myself.

EVanSciver Dec 22, 2010 10:50 AM

Guess that means your opposed to them? lol. If i did it, I would only look for one successful clutch. I think they are beautiful. Even if I only got one or two hatchlings. I wouldn't look to start a revolution and start selling hybrids all over.

Bloods are beautiful on their own, same with balls. I don't find the superballs more beautiful than their individual species. Personally I don't recommend hybridizing any species, it just clouds the blood lines and makes it difficult to ensure pure species.

Once you create a hybrid, all offspring of that hybrid are hybrids and it takes a very long time to 'breed out' the foreign dna. What really makes things complicated is not everybody is a honest breeder and will sell hybrids as pure...often to people who just don't know how to recognize a hybrid, especially when that hyrid looks more like one of the parent species, instead of a blend.
