Wild caught tentacled snakes

rickgordon Dec 19, 2010 09:17 PM

Looks like they are available again, I thought I would add my two cents for anyone trying them. It seems that they and many asain snakes become immune compromised from the stress of capture and acclimation and are suseptible to common fungal pathogens. From my research to properly aclimnate these snakes you need a an antifungal environment. I would use black water extract and keep the water acidic 6.0-6.5. Also established aquariums with alot of algae growth seem do well. It I was going to try them again I would get U.V. filter just to make sure. Unfortunately Christmas has me wiped-out or I would try them myself, hopefully they will available for awhile. If you have experience with these snake, successful or unsuccessful please post!

I'd go with CB animals, glades has some in the classifieds.

I had a group of CB animals for 7 years with no problems at all.
I kept the water warm, and well filtered.

I probably wouldn't go as far as UV filter, at least not for constant filtering, as it may kill beneficial bacteria that the plants and algae use, but for a establishment set up for WC animals, it probably wouldn't hurt.

They just need warm, clean water, and a stress free environment, and I think they can probably establish just fine, provided they are fairly healthy.

Easier said then done, very few imported tentacled snakes survive past 6 months. If you have had some that did so I would love to hear the details. They breed quite well however if they do survive the acclimation period. I definitely agree that captive bred are worth the extra money, unfortunately they are rarely available, which brings us back to the original problem, acclimating wild caught.

If it were me, I would get several quarantine setups for them, and get a few groups going and hope some of them beat the odds.

I had some WC Homalapsis that did okay for several months, and then the heater failed, and the water got pretty cold, and they pretty quickly went downhill after that.
not sure if they are prone to the same problems as Erpeton.

I don't have experience with Homalapsis, but maybe. You experience definitely suggest that temperatures are critical for them. Setting up mutliple groups sounds like a good strategy. I am hoping some will post their results here good or bad. In this hobby we often only hear about the successes yet it's from the failures that we truly learn the most.
