Jungle Carpet Python shedding cycle?

Midnight777 Dec 21, 2010 06:31 PM

How long is the full shed cycle for a JCP? Mine has been out of the opaque stage for around 2-3 days now and I can't figure out when he will shed. I don't want to wake up on christmas and find a big shedded skin. Will he shed before then or after?

Oh, his temps are in the upper 80s low 90s and he is between 4 and 5ft. Humidity is pretty good. My hygrometer broke the other day so I don't know the exact percentage.

He should be ready to shed out any time now. Try misting him heavily with room temp water. That usually will get all of my JCPs to finish the shed within a day.

I cleaned out his tank and put some cypress mulch from home depot for substrate (hopefully it wont kill him) and I sprayed him and his enclosure down with warm water.

And so, he refuses to shed even though he is ready and the humidity is up to where it should be.

Bigtattoo Dec 24, 2010 04:45 AM

You've done what you can for now. Be patient it should happen anytime now. As long as you keep the humidity up so he can slough cleanly there shouldn't be any problems.

He was finally able to break it and was able to shed. It was in pieces though but that can happen to the best of keepers.

Bigtattoo Dec 24, 2010 06:16 PM

I know it happens to me from time to time. Be sure he's shed clean, no eyecaps and nothing on the tail tip. Glad to hear that's over.

I was able to get everything off. Tail and eye caps included. For the eye caps, I hear to use tweezers to remove them. I have always used a wet paper towel and go over his head to remove them nice and easy. It seems to work best.

Bigtattoo Dec 25, 2010 11:02 AM

Good deal, yea use whatever your most comfortable with to remove eyecaps as long as it works who is to argue.

I was finally able to get a repti fogger for the tank so it keeps the tank humid and we are thinking on building a bigger cage. Would a 5ft high x 3ft wide be too big for him right now?

Bigtattoo Dec 26, 2010 04:19 AM

At the size and age of yours that size enclosure shouldn't be any problem.
