Anyone feed can BD food

Lia Dec 24, 2010 07:45 PM

Hi
I feed my 6 month old BD gutloaded crickets, vegetables and some fruit.

I was going to order a new UV/UVB bulb and saw a large selection of can and food in jars.

Anyone use any of it?

Wanted to try some as extra treat but have no idea which type.

Thank you

Hi Lia....all dragons are different. Most of mine never liked the canned food, but it doesn't hurt to try it. I hear of people who say that their dragons DO eat the crix and worms from a can. So....you'd have to try it to find out.

I have tried various canned foods for dragons and some are eaten and others are ignored. The 'Can O'" range of canned foods (insects cooked in the can) seem to be accepted fine by my dragon. I would stick with natural dragon feeder insects from this range, and not use any of the 'seafood' choices...like shrimp, which is more for turtles and other aquatic animals. The crickets, superworms, grass hoppers and silkworms (though I don't like the silkworms as its not the worms used, but the pupae, with just the cocoon removed. I don't think these are as nutritious as the worm before it forms a cocoon).

The freeze dried mixed fruits/vegetables and greens where you just add warm water before feeding...my dragon totally ignored. My blue tongued skinks ate it though.

For the most part these are fine as the occasional treat but I don't recommend feeding them as a staple, unless its the only source of insects available. They can get expensive though to feed as a staple, especially considering how cheap it is to order insects online.

Thank you both very much.

I am going to order some supplies on line and will try a couple different cans as a treat .

If he doesn't eat them will just put it in yard (local iguanas will eat it).

nature zone makes a soft bd cubed food that needs to be refridgerated claims its prickly pear flavored. I use it to encourage salad eating if feed as an only food it has a full diet value but still need new uvb bulbs even though it says it has calcium.

Thank you very much. I did not order that one but will now pick it up at pet store.

She ate every type I gave her. She has a big appetite and big eater.

Yes I use an extra UVB coil type bulb along with the UV basking light.

The breeder I got her from keeps her dragons outside all yr long which is strange because of the high humidity here in miami but their colors with real sun are amazing.
