Paraguay Yellowtail

steve fuller Dec 26, 2010 02:17 PM

I acquired an adult pair of recently imported yellowtails, originating from Paraguay, in mid-November. The male started feeding right away on f/t chicks. After two weeks, the female finally started on f/t quail and moved onto chicks. These snakes are easy to handle, once you've picked them up. The male shed two days ago and is pictured here. The female appears to be gravid and is in a shed.

Yes, they are. When you pick them up from their cages for cleaning they're fine. When you approach them from holding cage to return them they're quite defensive. Once you're holding them they keep moving but haven't bitten. They act much like racers rather than the captive born/raised Eastern and Texas indigos I'm used to.

I would expect a little attitude being adult W/C's. I'm real glad to hear they are doing well for you and quite possibly gravid. That is awesome. Keep us posted on their progress.

Here's the update. Female shed 12/31 and continues to feed on chicks. I'm assuming she's not gravid. Following professional advice, I've treated both snakes for internal parasites with Drontal Plus. Will repeat in two weeks. (Thanks, Regis) If you're looking for Paraguay hatchlings contact Alan B. Maybe he'll part with some after his eggs hatch.
