Sanzinia Courting

vegasbilly Jan 05, 2011 07:54 PM

Came home early from a biz trip and all the adults were jammed into their water bowl..and i do mean jammed! I pulled the bowl and w/in 3 hrs. one male is actively spurring my ginormous female. The smaller female is entwined w/her so they both may be getting some action. Last Sunday I dropped the NTL to 61F from 68F and actually bumped the DTH up a few ticks as well.

Oddly the addition of the second male elicited no reaction from either male sparring-wise but may have triggered all of this. My largest pair have been housed together for a year w/never a breeding reaction though I got the male too late last year to do any serious cycling...but unlike others I've read about they had no bouts of frivolous copulation or courting until now. They're about 6 weeks into this cycling regimen.

hello vegasbilly,
I'll show some love...
I've seen your picutes you posted in the past and they're beautiful!! I hope you have some good news to report in the future regarding your group. I have a green pair I keep together year round and have no expectations of breeding. If they breed they breed, if they don't they don't. My female is just past 3 years old and there has been mating but that doesn't mean anything.
Please post more pictures if you get time.
It's to bad sanzinia don't have co-dom for this/that, or het for this/that....they would get lots more love $$$$, kidding.
Continue Enjoying your sanzinia, they're great!!!

Thanks for the love! If they were bred more there could possibly be latent morphs out there! I keep a trio together year 'round and just added a second male to the group.

I've read they copulate all the time but mine never have shown any sexual activity until now...after some weeks of cycling. My largest female is over 6' w/enormous girth. The second female is right at 5'. The males per usual are far smaller. As mentioned earlier no male on male "combat" witnessed but I have noticed one male is the active courter and the other one stays in the backround. I'm thinking the dominance between the two has been more subtly established. I'll probably pull him tomorrow if he stays "dormant".

That's cool what you have going on over there Bill. I've always been a cage or two keeper all these years. Now all I have is one "old school" cage I made some 20 years ago with only my one pair of sanzies.
My female is 3 1/2 years now and the male is a year older. Both are 4 1/2 - 5 feet. I guess this year my female finally came of age due to seeing them locked up occasionally and the never-ending sperm plugs in the water bowl to clean up from the male. Additionally the dreaded "off-feeding" for the last couple months, or so, for the first time. I'm really glad to have a lot of resources like this to know that it's normal and not to freak out. They still look fine, I really can't even tell they haven't been eating. Throwing out the thawed rats over and over kinda sucks. No other rodent eaters in the house.
Enough babbling...have a good weekend.

My newest addition. Traded for this '09 female. She has a long way to go to get in the rotation! Checked on the adults, lots of spurring but no hook-ups yet.

Those are some gorgeous Greens! Nothing going on w/my group now! Last few nights there was lots of courting/spurring but now one pair is in a pile and the other pair are in separate corners of the cage. My Bar Necks resumed courtship after pulling the male for 3 days/nights so I may pull the males for a few nights for the heck of it and see what happens upon reintroduction.

Scrubbies huh? I bet they're not around your neck watching tv with you in the evening You're tougher than me. When I was selecting a new python/boa to have after my long term 24+ years yellow anaconda died was: attitude, size, and ease of care. (NOTE: Boelens are still too expensive, to hell with the size criteria on that species!!!)
I considered a molluccan, however I rarely ever see a scrub being free-handled and I am NOT EVER going to be one of those people afraid of their animals and don't go into the cage for some fear reason. YES, I'm not ashamed to admit I fear and respect large/aggressive snakes even though I've been bitten a million time. I can handle/walk my sanzinias any time I want. Thanks for the pics...
