Eastern Gartersnake-odd snake behavior?

Phalcon Jan 06, 2011 01:16 PM

I found an Eastern Gartersnake one night in 2004 in SC while on vacation. I brought it home.

I have had this snake since then. It was about 16 inches long and is now only 18ish. I have no idea if it is a male or female.
(I'm guessing male, only by size)

Not sure but it seems to go against all the "rules" I know about keeping gartersnakes.

It does not like a light on it's tank.

It is an aggressive feeder on EVERYTHING-it eats mice, worms, fish, other snakes (so it has no tank mate anymore), it even tries to eat fingers. It has always been this way.

He is most active at night.

Is this unusual or is it just me thinking so.

I have had other Easterns and they were all picky eaters and required a full spectrum light to do well. I tried using the FS light and the snake would not eat or even come out of his hide.

So I'm doing it his way. :3 Am I wrong?

doesn't really sound like a garter snake. unless the light on the tank gets too hot for the snake to be under it... and unless the snake ate its cagemate in a feeding freezy or escaped?
