What to feed JCP...

pgcc0912 Jan 25, 2011 10:25 AM

I got a 2008 JCP male that only eats mice. It's starting to be a pain because I have to feed it 4 adult mice every feeding and it's depleting my frozen mice. Unfortunately he won't touch rats, so I'm thinking maybe guinea pigs or quail. Is there anything else I can try?

Feed it a couple quail, then thaw one out on top of a rat and stick a few feathers in the rats mouth! Gradually, wean it off the quail smell!

Ok, sounds good. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes. Thanks!

I have had good luck with thawing mice on top of rats.... rub the mice all over the rat. Let the snake get a little hungry too.

Doesn't always work, but it is worth a try.

I have a male jag sib that will strike, coil and then drop a rat and sit waiting forever for his mice. No amount of scenting with mouse, mouse bedding, chicken fat will get him to eat a rat. I might have to try the quail or chick trick though. I sure as heck don't want to have to stuff him with mice when he reaches 6-7'.

Let him get a bit hungry. Feed him a warm, F/T mouse on the small size to get the feeding response/eating response going. As soon as he swallows the mouse give him a warm F/T rat, again small. Usually after gobbling up the mouse they will just eat the rat. Do this several times if it works and the snake may acquire a taste for rats. Good luck with this. Bill
