Cleaning old piece of wood ?

bmelv24 Jan 25, 2011 11:56 AM

I have a large piece of wood I have had for along time and been in a few different snake cages. It had been out of use for a year or so, and I am ready to get it back into a snake's cage. What is the best method to get it clean or do I even need to worry about getting old smells off it? I have sprayed it down with a 10% bleach/water mixture and rinsed it off multiple times, and then hit it today with a 50/50 chlorhexidene/water mix and rinsed it with water. Any more or think that is enough?

If the wood has been out of use for that long, it doesn't harbor mite eggs and is obviously not growing mushrooms, so there is likely nothing there to do anything..

Another good method is to soak the wood for a good 10 minutes or more in a bleach solution (in a bathtub for example. Cleans the bathtub too.)

I have a half log in one of my cages and I just spot clean what I can if the snake craps on it and after, I put it in the over at 200 degrees for about a half hour. That kills everything.
