New Adult Female Dumerils and Question..

boachick1985 Jan 26, 2011 12:28 PM

Hey all I picked up this adult female Dumerils at the white plains show this past weekend from J and D Reptiles. It was my first show in quite a few years cuz I've been outta the loop for a while now but happy to report that I've decided to get back into the thick of things Dumerils have always been one of my favorite snakes and I used to keep them a few years ago so when I saw her I had to take her home. She's flawless except for a little bubble on her nose from a old healed up nose rub. The owner of J and D asured me that he had his vet check it out and it's just scar tissue. He also told me that she had been locked up with an adult male about a month ago so keep your fingers crossed! Oh, quick question, how many months in do you begin to notice her lower body begin to swell? Thanks everyone!

That's not the simplest question to answer. I'd say roughly a couple months in, you may be able to tell. However, I have females that most people can not tell they're gravid and they're about two weeks from dropping. So, from my experience, it's easiest for me to tell just by knowing the female, and judging from distention in the belly vs. looking from above. With a single lock up, or even several, there's a very good chance that she is not gravid as Dumerils males will breed seemingly year round. Congrats on the new Dumerils, there's quite a few males on the classifieds right now if you really want to try breeding her.

Congrats on the new Dum!!! She's a beaut!!!!

What Paul said is right. It can be hard to tell if you Dum is gravid.

Great looking Dumerils Boa. Sometimes you can tell a female is pregnant by a change in behavior. For instance, my Dumerils Boa Cleopatra began refusing food after she became pregnant and started basking more. Best of luck to you.
