Nile crocs banned

brianfl33916 Jan 26, 2011 04:02 PM

Are Nile crocs banned from being sold from state to state? I was really upset when the import of camains was banned and being sold from state to state.

Definitely not. We shipped a nile last year from NC to Idaho, via delta dash, with no problems whatsoever. And, what are you talking about caimans not being allowed to be sold state to state? Where did you hear that? There were certainly some import restrictions, but I see them on the show circuit all the time, so I can't imagine those vendors (several of which I know personally) are really gonna risk fines or more severe penalties for what amounts to a small fraction of their animals for sale.

Spectacled, Yacare' and Brown caiman are CITES I and can't cross state lines sans CBW wildlife permits. The dwarfs can move freely about the country so long as local laws are observed.

Yea, I had heard about the spec ban, but had not heard about the yacare or the brown (what's the latin name for the brown btw?). It's amazing though, both the spec we currently have and a yacare we used to have both came from NY...and were confiscated in Charlotte where apparently the city (or the county) flat out bans the ownership. But, Animal Control had no problem sending them to us, because NC says we can own any other croc species BUT American Alligators without permit.

Brown = fuscus

The entire caiman group was banned due to similiarity of appearance.

They can send them to you because no money is exchanging hands. Donations and gifted animals are excempt from the law. Allot of animals move around the country that way.

Aren't American alligators game species in NC? The same rule applies here in Texas.

Well, not only the money thing, but they're still being transferred within state lines, so there's no issues there! As far as gators, they still consider them endangered here (or species of concern) either way, that's their reason for keeping them a permit only species. It's not exactly a difficult permit to get, just have to prove that you have the proper enclosures for the ADULT animals (proper of course being defined by them). Not considered a game species though. Illegal to hunt or kill an alligator in the state. Only wildlife officials are allowed to remove what are deemed "problem" gators.

There are municipality bans and there are strict regulations in some states but I am not aware of any any interstate commerce bans.

Niles can be shipped across state lines with no problem.
