Does anyone know if...

It's legal to own an alligator in California? Someone is selling one on Craigslist. I'm interested in purchasing it, but don't know if there are any special permit requirements etc. Can someone please direct me to a website that would provide this information?

Thanks,
Anthony

Alligators are a restricted species in California. I would imagine receiving a permit to possess one would be very difficult.

I thought something didn't seem right about that. The website was helpful, great for referencing other laws.

Thanks,

That has all the laws for each state summed up with links to the offical site if you like longer explanations.
I got my baby gator about 6 months ago and they're illegal to own here. However I have plenty of land and a nice inside setup while he's growing. Either way he will always be taken care of and have a good home. He will only be around the people who raise him and my guests, so I'm not worried about him getting out or away and swallowing any kids or pets. I got him before I knew he was illegal and honestly really didn't care because I know I have the capability to care for him properly and not only that, but he's probably one of the most spoiled gators ever. So I'm not sure what your situation is but I just don't advertise mine to everyone and I also have some Cane Corso guard dogs, so if a game warden is coming I'll know in plenty of time to get him away and hidden. Sorry for the rant, I know they made those laws because of the stupid people out there and the things they've done with their pets. But I know mine is lucky to have me as an owner and now that he depends on me I'll never turn my back on him...Especially because some politican or officer thinks so.
