dragonzilla Feb 02, 2011 04:45 AM

Does anyone have either of these bulbs with a uvb meter? Are mega rays by reptile uv self ballasted are they even safe to use?

All mercury vapor bulbs will put out more UVB than a 10.0 UVB bulb. Most MVBs put out between 25-75 units of MVB depending on the brand and rating of the individual bulbs, the distance above the basking area and age of the bulb. The tubes rated for 10.0 only put out 10.0 units. (again, it various a bit on distance from bulb and age of bulb)

There are a couple sites that show ratings for various bulbs. If you check out Dreamworks's post a couple threads down, he gives a reading of his bulb and the sun with his own UVB meter.

www.uvguide.co.uk/index.htm (gave the main page as this site is a great resource...you can navigate to the UVB bulb pages using the left hand navigation buttons)

if you follow the manufacturer instructions on the box, they are as safe as any other bulb. Typically mount about 18" above the basking spot vertically, not at an angle. If on an angle MVB's tend to burn out faster. If outside the cage make sure its secure so it can't be knocked over by household animals or children..and nothing flammable is near the bulb.
