Separating mealworm beetles

Lia Feb 18, 2011 03:04 AM

Hello

I set up 1000 adult mealworms in plastic bin with
Gerber powdered baby foods, oatmeal, whole wheat flour, bran and ground up dry dog kibble and add potatoe or carrot for moisture.

They are doing very well and now lots of beetles.

Should the beetles be removed or can the whole life cycle take place in the bin without larvae being eaten.

I ask as have no babies but not sure if to soon for babies or beetles are eating them.

Thank you

No need to remove the beetles, the entire life cycle can carry on in this setup. You may want to set up another container and move some of the beetles to establish a second colony.

Thank you very much as never thought of removing beetles and starting a new colony.

I had to order more mealworms (2000 ct) because no babies yet (none that I can see) but the colony is doing great with BIG fat adults and lots of beetles.

I just go through them to fast and should have started the colony during winter.

I have bird aviary with finches (Florida) and they breed now left and right and throw lots mealworms in aviary as they love insects with their seeds during breeding season.

Thanks
