Porcelain 5.5" light

rkruse3 Feb 21, 2011 08:39 PM

Does anyone know how hot these lights can get without catching on fire? I am almost positive that I have a ZooMed 5.5" dome fixture that Zoomed says will support up to a 100 watt bulb. I have a 100 watt bulb standard incandescent bulb in there and the dome gets upwards of 220 degrees. Is this okay? I am a little uneasy with it. My other domes (albeit a little larger, but have larger bulbs) only get around 160 or so.

The 5.5 inch domes do not dissipate as much heat as the larger diameter domes. That is why they are rated for lower wattage bulbs compared to the larger domes.

My advice is to not use a 100 Watt bulb in any 5.5 inch dome if at all possible. The 8.5 inch dome is a much better choice above 75 Watts.

I do not think 220 deg F will cause a fire, but that is very hot to the touch. 160 deg is much much better.

Thanks for the information. I put a lower watt bulb in the 5.5".
