Alabama & Georgia salamanders in Feb.

CarlKoch Feb 28, 2011 04:46 AM

Took a trip to NE AL & NW GA over Presidents Day weekend and found a few sal species.

First find -- a lovely northern slimy sal.

A larger slimy. We found several on this trip.

Lead-back phase of the southern redback sal.

The Pigeon Mountain salamander, Plethodon petraeus, the highlight of our trip!

Tiny two-lined sal.

Northern spring salamander larva, about 5” long.

Southern redback sal with a somewhat unusual coloration.

Northern dusky larva in cave pool.

Adult found under leaf-litter next to a seep.

We ended the trip with a very large cave sal we found eyeing us from a crevice. We were able to coax it out for pics.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Tim! We were incredibly stoked to find the PM, and we were really excited about the appearance of the odd southern!

Carl,

That's a pretty nice article, data and collection of photos you just had published in "Herp Nation."

Excellent work!

we have found a few slimy salamanders around the house under stuff, usually take a pic and then let them go about their business. We did have some in a tank for a couple of days. They are some pretty interesting little creatures, they seem to act like they are slow and unactive, but man they are up to something soon as the lights go out, lol

It would be interesting to see some video of their behavior in the tank. There's an amazing portion of Attenborough's "Life in Cold Blood" DVDs where the behavior of some cave-dwelling slimys is shown.

Always like going out on salamander hunts myself... thanks for sharing your hunting expedition... especially like the Cave Salamander.

Thanks, Gerry! I really like how that shot came out, too -- such a gangly, bubble-eye fellow!

Great shots of some very cool sallys. The second pic of the No. Slimy, looks like he should do commercials he could replace the Geico gecko with that face. LOL
