LGphotography Feb 28, 2011 09:16 PM

Hello,
Can you help to ID these snake-looking-like-lizard from Mato Grosso do Sul / Goias.

It is called "cobra-de-vidro", but I didn't find a confident ID in English (nor latin).

Not only lizard looking it's a lizard. It's a member of the glass lizard or also known as legless lizard family. This one is Ophiodes cf. striatus striped or striated glass lizard. The glass lizards have only recently been discovered in portions of Brazil in the last several years.

Called glass lizards as their tails break off very easily as a decoy so the lizard can escape predators. If you look at your picture you can see it is regrowing the tail by how abruptly it tapers off from the body. Normally it would be a very smooth taper and possibly several inches long.
