retics in quebec

stephanbakir Mar 01, 2011 07:01 PM

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here knew if retics were legal to own in quebec?
I have been helping my friend with his for years, and I have personally owned snakes for the majority of my life.In a few months he will be moving overseas and wont be able to bring his snake with him and I have been thinking of adopting it.

Where can I find the laws regarding the ownership of large reptiles in quebec, I have bounced around on the phone for about 2 weeks now and havent gotten a straight answer from anyone yet, they keep transfering me back and forth.

(because im sure someone is going to bring it up) Yes I do know how large this snake will get,(currently 22 feet) and I know that I wont safely be able to handle it on my own, and the costs involved in keeping a snake this size fed and healthy.

There isn't any provincial law banning retics in Quebec but there may be municipal laws that may. Typically the website for the city/town/community you live in lists their by-laws. Not all do but that is one place to check. If none are present, you can check with the local SPCA about exotic laws. Though I would just ask about restrictions on owning large non venomous snakes...they probably won't know what a retic was till they hear the word 'python'. Even then some may not even know now to identify a reticulated python from other large snakes.
