Daniel Klopson Mar 11, 2011 04:14 PM

Ive been told they are generally around the whole coast of Mexico from Texas to Central America. I'm visiting Mexico in the near future and I'm hoping to enjoy some herping. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a few photos. Thanks for the information, Dan

Generally speaking NO, it is not. The Mexican government restricts animal exports, but does grant permits on occassion. Usually these go to recognized Zoos, educational/research institutions etc. Many of the animals we see in the trade today come from old founder stock, much of it of questionable origin.

You really don't want to run afoul of these sort of laws, and you should become familiar with the Lacey Act, as the USFWS enforces it vigorously and penalities are severe...most guys conclude it is not worth it, they really play hard ball... Keep in mind some folks are breeding healthy and attractive D.c. rubidus, and they have fairly diverse blood lines. If you want to learn more about import and export, contact the USFWS, and also foreign governments. It is often a tedious process I am told. Good luck, Vic

Thank you for your thoughts. I'll check into it carefully, but I don't expect to bother with it. I would consider myself very luck to locate and photograph one, hopefully I see something other than iguanas!

And it is possible. However....... you REALLY need to find the right people to get threw the paperwork. What i've learned so far: #1 it's easier to LIVE in Mexico and sell drymarchon into the states than to bring a pet home. #2 it's not cheap. #3. The mexico side is cool with it as long as they make a little money on it. #4. Story changes based on who's answering the phone.... lesson, need a name, time, exact office location, and a mexican official who works well with reptiles. Stay tuned, Im gonna figure it out.
