question about crested eggs

megalon Mar 14, 2011 09:37 AM

I have an adult pair of cresteds in a large tank, with a nest box made from a disposable gladware Tupperware box.I haven't witnessed any mating, but I figured better safe than sorry. I was cleaning the cage this morning, when I found 2 eggs buried in a corner of the tank. I'm sure that I rolled them over, as I wasn't expecting to find eggs (I was just scooping out old substrate ).I have since set the eggs up in a deli cup with vermiculite. My question is, can crested eggs survive being rolled? I have no clue to the original orientation of the eggs, I'm lucky I noticed them before they got dumped in a trash bag.

I believe rolling the eggs within 24 hours of them being laid is ok. At this point, since you don't know how long ago the eggs were lain before you found them, or even if you rolled them, there isn't any way to know they are still good.

Keep incubating and see if the eggs develop. I also suggest you check for eggs in 2 weeks from the time you found them..then every day after that as additional clutches are laid withing 2-4 weeks of eachother. If you have more than one female in the cage, you may have to keep checking every day now, till you find a second pair of eggs. Typically though, if you look at the underside of the gecko you can see eggs through the belly...appearing as large ovals.

Well, both eggs hatched out yesterday, so evidently I didn't roll them as much as I thought. Both little geckos are crazy cute, harlequins like their mom, but with freckles (from their dad, a blonde dalmation ).

they certainly do sound really cute. Congrats on successfully hatching them.
