Malagasy Cat Eyed Snake

ashgarrison Mar 14, 2011 08:43 PM

So, yesterday I was at a reptile expo in Arlington, Texas...and I came across a snake I have never seen before. The breeder told me it was a Cat Eyed Snake...from Madagascar. GORGEOUS little gold snake. I have about $50 bucks for him. I get home, and cannot find ANY info about captive keeping of these snakes!

I know they are rear fanged, and semi-venomous...and thats about it.

ANY INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I have been having problems finding info on captive keeping of the snake. But I contacted a breeder and got some keeping info.

I am slightly concerned that I bought this animal at a "public" expo that was supposed to be non-venomous animals only, and the animal was represented as non-venomous...

From my experience most classify rear-fanged as harmless to humans. I'm not saying you wont have a problem but the method of delivery is in effective so the venom potency is neglible. I've heard some things about this species and I think that you will be okay unless you shove your finger down it's throat.

That's not the correct name for the Madagascar cat eyed snake. The correct Latin name for what you have is Madagascarophis colubrinus (though there are a couple of other species in the genus it could be). Here is a basic description of the genus.

Hi from France,
Madagascarophis colubrinus insularis. I have a group of 7 specimens and this year I have had 2 young from the first 5 eggs. There is a group of this snake in breeding at the University of Texas if my memory is good. It is not easy to start young snakes and force feed must be envisaged. Very few informations about this species. The adult snakes I have take food without lot of problem on mice. You can see picture of young to this link :
