calculating dosage of Flagyl

Rod_Mcleod Mar 16, 2011 04:59 PM

I'm wanted to verify my calculation of the proper dosage of a 250mg/5ml Flagyl suspension for a thayeri with those more experienced with this procedure. By my caculations the dosage is so small it seems it would be difficult for me to measure.
First I see a recommended dosage for tricolors should not exceed 40mg/kg. I'm going to treat a thayeri, so thought I'd stay below this recommendation. I calculated for a dose of 30mg/kg. Is this adequate?
Assuming it is: for the 161g snake I calculate 4.83mg of Flagyl. So adjusting for the 250mg/5ml suspension solution I calculate that I would need 0.096ml of that solution, which seems tiny. My oral dosing syringe has increments of 0.2 ml, so I would only need about 1/2 of one of those increments? Does that sound about right? If so, that is not much more than the volume of the inside of the needle itself!
If the calculations are correct, is it recommended to further dilute the solution with water to get a more accurate measurement? Or I suppose I could get a smaller syringe.
Thanks for anyones help on this.

Rod,
Your calculations are correct. I would suggest that you dilute your suspension up to 25 ml with distilled water and use 0.5 ml of that solution after shaking very well. This will make it much easier to measure and accurately administer. Also, for administration of that dosage, I would use a 1 ml insulin syringe and remove the 27 gauge needle. If the needle hub on the barrel has a sharp edge, a slight amount of heat from a match or lighter can be used to melt the edge smooth, but take care as it will melt easily. Good luck,

Kelly

Thanks for the verification on my calcs Kelly and the suggestion on further dilution and using the insulin syringe. Guess I expected I'd just be able to suck a couple ml straight out of the bottle and squirt it down the snakes throat.lol I'll get an insulin syringe tomorrow.

I agree with Kelly, but suggest just getting a 1cc syringe without an attached needle. No need to modify, and is just as accurate. Any pharmacy should have these as well.

still check the rim at the tip of the syringe for any sharp edges.
