Advice on choosing a pet lizard?

megangm Mar 27, 2011 11:01 PM

Hey everyone, I'm hoping to decide what would be the perfect new addition. I really want a lizard, but there are just so many to choose from. Right now I have a ball python, two Hermann's tortoises, and a rainbow boa. So, I have no problems with building a large custom habitat, as I did for my torts or animals with very specific care, like my boa. Anyway, I want something generally docile, medium to large size, that doesn't mind being handled, but wont become aggressive if not handled every single day. I've been looking at tegus, uromastyx, iguanas, and beardies. I know beardies are great pets and with all the morphs, there are several beautiful options, I've just never really been in love with them, you know? With iggs, I've always wanted one and I just adore them, but I'm not sure I'll have enough time to spend handling/taming one. Tegus and uros I don't know much about yet, still reading up on them. Any recommendations?

I see what you mean with Beardies. I've owned one in the past, probably the most tame animal I've come in contact with, but now I'm not really into them. Uro's are really good and beyond easy to care for since they eat loads of veggies. Well it all depends on if you want something simple or exotic?

Simple: I would say either a Uro or even Agama. Beardies are good but more of almost a "kid" reptile, at least that's how I feel about them.

Exotic: Peach throat monitors are fantastic. Little expensive but beautiful to look at, tame pretty good but very fast. Chinese water dragons are very nice too.

Personally, I'd say Peach Throat
Good Luck!

Hello
I would Recommend Bearded Dragons, Chinese Water Dragons, Leopard Geckos, Even a Savannah Monitor. But with Savannahs you would need to spend Time with them and Watch there Diet as they can get Fat,and they can get 4ft long so if you like to build big cages they would be the pet for you, it all depends on what catches your eye and what you enjoy the most, as for Bearded Dragons they are a Wonderful pet, they come in different Sizes, Colors, and Textures, They are Friendly no matter what (as long as you take care of them)
