Can't tell when my Cal. King is hungry!

Oreo_Snake Mar 28, 2011 08:33 AM

Our Cal. King seems to have reached her adult size and now seems to be eating much less frequently than she did as a juvie... She used to want a meal about once per week, then it was once every two, now she's only eating once a month or less. She's alert and often explores around her tank, but when we offer her a mouse (same size she hungrily ate before), it turns out she just wants to come out and play.

We're tired of thawing out mice to throw away, but we don't want her to starve... Any advice?

You should ask this question on the main kingsnake forum. This forum gets very little traffic.

Sounds like she, might be a Him, and this time of year is only thinking about other females. Sounds like my male Cal kings eating habits, at this time of year.

It's wintertime, and some snakes go off feed in the Fall and/or Winter. Especially once they reach adulthood. I'd see if you can find a place where you can cool down the snake to 55-60 degrees for six to eight weeks and then set it back up how you have it now.

Males sometimes go off feed in the Spring, but they usually become restless as well.
