Crocodilian USFWS Special Rules

GLZ Mar 31, 2011 01:24 PM

17.42(C) Designed for the skin trade but also allowed import and interstate commerce of live Nile crocodiles of CITES app II populations and Saltwater Crocodiles of Australia and PNG populations.

17.42(A) also designed for the skin trade but allowed interstate commerce of live American Alligators

17.42(G) also designed for the skin trade but did NOT exempt or allow live Yacare, Spectacled or Brown Caiman to be imported or travel in interstate commerce.

I just found out today that these special rules have been changed and or combined into one big crocodilian special rule and that the special rule does NOT exempt live specimens.

Not sure exactly how this now plays out with regards to import/export and interstate commerce but I was informed that I would need a Endangered species import permit to import live Nile Crocodiles from any country including South Africa to the USA

Crazy how "special rules" that have been in effect basicly forever are just changed out of the blue and no one is informed??

It appears the new special rule was issued around 2008 and that it covers American Alligators, Nile Crocodiles (all populations), Saltwater crocodiles (australia & PNG populations), Morelet crocodiles (mexico and Belize populations), Yacare caimans (all populations), Spectacled Caimans (all populations), Brown Caimans (all populations).
