we moved to south mississippi and come across these all the time, I am pretty familiar with most other species here, but these I have been having trouble finding in any field guide. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

It looks like an old (or possibly melanistic) red-eared slider.

looks like an older chicken turtle, I could tell better if I saw the back legs.
