How do u keep mealworm culture mite free

Bianca Apr 09, 2011 09:19 AM

Hi
I had a good mealworm culture going but started to get white mites on the beetles and as time passed more and more beetles were born ill formed with no wings and the culture crashed.

The moisture was not noticeable as it was an open top bin and would only add moisture via potatoe slice or carrot .

I did add fish food (dry flakes) because bought new brand of fish food and the fish did not like it so added it to mealworm culture and they loved it but would not think that would cause mites.

How does everyone keep their culture mite free?

The mites were the tiny white types not the pink types.

I intend to clean with bleach, microwave the bin than microwave new oatmeal bedding and try again.

Thanks

Mealworms were in laundry room and now imagine to much humidity in the room itself and though I did not notice that in the mealworm bin it might be the cause.

Will start new culture in kitchen cabinet.

Thanks
