what wood / paint finish??

kingevil Apr 09, 2011 11:57 PM

i'm wondering what the most cost efficient plywood is for cages, if i'm just going to paint them with semi-gloss black paint? also, i would like to find out if there is some kind of clear coat i can paint over the black, to make it nice and shiny? i'm also looking for little to no outgassing as i can't have my animals cageless for long. thanks!

Umm, you can use gloss paint to make it nice and shiny, instead of semi gloss and then a clear coat.

Gloss paint is easier to wipe clean. Rustoleum to name one mfgr sells a line of home-project water-based paint that cures to be very tough. I used some on a doghouse roof 3 yrs ago (gloss), and it has held up perfectly outside the entire time.

Water-based paint will cure much faster than oil-based.
