anyone have or know of anyone breeding or keeping calico mice?...
I have had in the last 20 years...just 2 calico that I know of here...I have a male right now (other was a male, long ago)...I have had what almost apeared to be calico but were probably in fact bi-color yellow /white mice with brindling on them....the last one I had was setup with a dozen girls or so and never did make any kids in like 4 months ....this one was just setup today...wish me luck...!....

I know a few years ago there was talk on this...a guy said he had a few....(actually might have been Trooper Walsh)....
have never seen any for sale...but we snake people tend to not be around the "pet mice" people too often...they frown upon us....
just wondering if any were actually being bred....

.....Thanxxx.....JY

I don't know much about the genetics of calico mice and never seen it in any mice I had bred in the past. At the time when I was breeding mice (used for snake food, but was just having fun with it) I was aiming to produce what is called a blacked eyed white...an all white mouse with black eyes, different from the albino mice which have red or ruby eyes. I was nearly there too..but ended up culling the lot and selling them as snake food.

Anyway, there was one time I produced a tri-color rat...but I never bred him. It was more a fluke I noticed in the litter once the fur came in. But I was breeding for snake food so didn't feel a need to keep it. That and I didn't really have the room to start a rat breeding project besides what I bred for my snakes (only had the one trio and they produced all I needed and more)

Curious I googled calico mice and came up with a few hits, which I copied below for you. One a bit about the genetics (and the root site seems pretty good to learn more about mouse genetics and possible breeders) and another for a breeder (no clue on the quality of this breeder, so no guarantee on quality or whether he really has calico mice). Lastly, I included a link to the exotics forums on a kingsnake sister site dealing with mice as pets... I advise not openly announcing you breed mice for snake food..some may take offense to that. So what they don't know, they can't complain about LOL. Some there are very much aware of who hangs in the snake forums and feeder forums and also keep rodent pets too. Its been slow lately, so may not get a response right away, but be patient.

Thanxx ALOT....I'll check it all out...
I just wondered if there were any people here with them, or woith any cool ,odd or weird mice colors....don't see much out there anymore....
as for pet people...yes...just don't mention WHY we breed mice...

last time I was at a lecture with a Penn State biologist to learn more about mice breedings...there were like 4 or 5 breeders for food and 3 pet people...all boys and all girls...LOL...the one refered to me as being "morbid"...we were all talking about different clean and humane ways to dispatch rodents....of course the 4 guys were in one row behind the 3 girls....!.....anyways...I just don't have time to run to their meetings and see what mcie and rats they have that are really cool.....all mine are bred out...so many breedings there are no siamese, burmese, super blacks ,poodles,,etc etc anymore....

....Thanxx....!

Greetings all! Been forever and a half since I posted on Kingsnake (let's just say I've been away on life's many adventures and now have some time. hehe)

Anyhoo, thought I'd contribute a great page for wanting to know about the different breeds and colors of rodentia.
I too would LOVE to produce a BEW (black-eyed white) and am always on the lookout for new, fun mice. Presently, I have some fun colors, but would love to trade with anyone in the So Cal area that also shares this interest. Yes, I breed mine for 2 reasons, fun pets as well as high quality feeders. I get the quirky eye from strictly pet mouse breeders but if you choose to keep a predator in your house (ie lizards that eat mice, snakes, etc.) you choose to fulfill their food requirements. I keep the nicest, best mice for pets and weed out the less desirable stock as feeders (ie high aggressors, etc.)
I know, touchy subject for those that believe in only one way or the other but people raise cattle as pets or food, same with various other livestock out there. No difference really.

So you can always point that out to those that shake a finger at our hobby of keeping reptiles. ;D

Glad to be back, hopefully once the endless OT on my present job ends, I'll have more time to post again!

Great site for learning about the varying breeds and colors of rats and mice. Enjoy!
