first candycane clutch!

shannon brown Apr 17, 2011 07:05 PM

My (08) candycane was borderline for breeding so I just kept my eye on her and sure enough she swelled up so I threw her brother and her father in with her.Well, I got five good looking eggs from her today. Now the long 60 days.LOL...

LOL, sure I will jump right on that.
Time will tell but I am sure a couple should be candy's.
Both the greeri laid last light so now the next 60 days will seem like a freaking year. And to think I got bad egs from all these girls last year????wth?
Anyways,The larger het gave me 8 eggs and for sure 5 are great but then three are kinda iffy..... the smaller het female gave me five perfect.
Can't wait.

What enormous eggs for such a little snake! She looks deflated. Seeing this, I wont be so shocked when my snakes lay their clutches ( a first for us all).

When you first posted this I thought you meant the Applegate pyro line and how different yours looked from mine. What is the origin of this line? Genetics? Eggs look great.

Rick, about 4 years ago I was lucky enough to buy a pair of f1 Philly Zoo stock Knoblochi that are from San Juanito and aren't related to any of the other three or four lines in the states. The only reason I got them was just to have some new blood.
Well, in (08) I bred them for the first time and to my surprise one of the six babies that hatched was that candycane. There was one more dead in the egg that was also a candycane.I figured it was genetic but I still can't be 100% sure.In (09) I only got three good eggs but again I hatched one more candycane so I am pretty sure this is just another simple recessive gene.
Last year I got all slugs so nothing to show.
This is the first year doing any back breeding so when this clutch hatches I should know more.
What I do know is they are pure knoblochi and they don't have the applegate blood in them although I am pretty sure its pretty much the same kind of gene at work.

p.s. my f1 pair bred again this year as well and she is about to lay so maybe another one or two from that clutch as well.

Thanks Shannon. And congrats on the new line. With yours and Applegates line, I still find it hard to believe it is all controlled by a single simple recessive gene.

With the limited number of knob lines out there it is surprising to see 2 candycane/hypo lines. Shannon -- what is the lineage of your knobs? Any shared ancestors with Osborne's line?
