Plants NOT to plant ...

mmathis Apr 18, 2011 09:43 AM

Just remembered another question I wanted to ask!

I researched which plants to and not to plant with my turtles, and didn't have too much trouble locating what I needed. But before I really paid attention, I bought and planted some marigolds and lobelia, which I now see are contraindicated. Is this serious enough that I should replace them NOW, or let it go for this season (since they are annuals)?

You know the old saying...don't do what I do....but my boxies had the run of my yard for 30 years and I had all kinds of plants there. In those days we didn't have a comp. and didn't know any better, but I've never had a sick boxie from eating plants. Today I have a turtle garden, and have all kinds of plants and never looked at any lists. In the wild, I'm sure they come into contact with bad plants, and they just know enough not to eat them. Just saying. It also has a lot to do with your enclosure and how big it is. If it's on the small side, I would take precaution, but if it's big enough for them to choose what they can eat, that's a different story. I never look at lists for my boxies, only my tortoises, as they eat everything in sight and I have to be a little more careful.

Makes perfect sense. I'll leave them. There are enough edible & "safe" plants to keep them busy.
