Female California Kingsnake

evriley Apr 20, 2011 09:02 AM

My 6 year old kingsnake has been laying eggs, though she has never been around a male snake. My question is how long should it take for all the eggs to be laid and what are common behaviors. She shed before and has laid three eggs so far, but it looks as though there are more to come. She is burrowing like crazy in her tank substrate which is shredded coconut shell. Any ideas? Thank you very much!

If you haven't already give her an egg box, even though you will not be trying to hatch the eggs, giving her an ideal spot to lay them will help her out. If your not sure she has laid them all, take her to a vet, a simple radiograph should determine if she has any left over. GOOD LUCK!

There are still lumps along her body so I am sure there are still some eggs. I am wondering what an average/normal timeframe is for her to be laying eggs.

Normally a snake would lay all her eggs in a matter of hours. She is not laying them likely because she has not had an appropriate place to lay them. Give her a sweater box full of damp spaghnum moss and a hole in the lid. If she has possibly been near a male in the last year or even two I would not write off them being infertile. Either way you need to give her a place to lay or they will start doing damage.

A sweater box? I am a little confused, her tank will not hold a sweater box so I need to remove her from her tank then? As I stated before I am not terribly familiar with snake issues, hence the queations. Thank you for all your help.

A tupperware box that is the right size for the snake. Often this is a sweater sized box....for storing sweaters....thats why.

I am not trying to be difficult, I understand a sweater box would be for storing sweaters. I am obviously trying to inquire as to what size would be appropriate. She is 5 ft long and her tank is a 55 gal. 4'x1'. I will just figure something out I suppose. Thank you.
