How to Make PVC Cages?

Bkalinowski Apr 24, 2011 06:16 AM

I am interested in making my own pvc caging for my collection. What type of pvc do you guys think is best? Does anyone know how to chemically weld the pvc together? I can also get it in half inch. Do you think I can screw them together?

Thanks
Brett

I have used this to weld pvc couplers to a base for water cups

I personally think that butt joints with screws is plenty strong and easy if you go with 1/2" material.

Can you give more details on the cages you plan on building and the specie you will be using them for?

I plan on cages for boas and burms. The cage size would be 4*2*1 and 8*2*2. What kind of screws would you use?

Thanks Guys

I would suggest reinforcing the outside perimeter of the sides with 1"x2"'s. I would use poplar, but high grade pine will work. Cut and paint the 1x2's then attach them to the outside perimeter of the end panels screwing from the plastic panel into the 1x2's. I would also use a 1x2 on the inside, back and front of the ceiling and floor panels as well. This will give you a better material to screw the panels to during assembly, making a much sturdier structure. you won't be sorry.

I saw a thread on another forum where he used 1/2" PVC sheets and traditional wood joinery. Sliding dovetails to assemble the carcasses and rabbeted out the back and front of the carcasses to put in the panels. He used #6 flat head self tapping screws to secure it all once assembled. A router with a 1/4" dovetail and 1/4" rabbeting bit and you're in business.

That is very interesting big T. I had thought about sliding dovetails for pvc cage construction but never went any further with it than that.

Do you have a link to that thread?

Brett,
where did you get the pvc, i have done some research and found that it is really expensive. Clark

Sorry I have been away from the computer. I know the pvc is crazy money. I priced it out and it would cost me 20 or 30 bucks more to have the cages shipped. It is a no brainer at that point. I will let the pros handle building my cages.

Thanks to all who posted.
