I have what I strongly believe is a male plains garter. He he behaving strangely in that he will not eat. Now I know if it breeding season for most snakes but he acts hungry comes out as he is looking for food when I approach the tank but when food is offered he ignores it. So far he has refused salmon and earthworms which he normally consumes with gusto! Is the simply a breeding season issue? He was a rescue so I don't have much experience with garters.

Thanks,
Miller

How long has he refused? If it has been less than two weeks, you are worrying to soon. He may be just going into a shed cycle, it is common for a snake to not eat a week or more before or around a shed cycle.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for all the misspellings in the original post, I must have been typing in the dark!
