carpen python sores?

gizzy20001 May 10, 2011 10:52 PM

I went today to check on a friends snakes while he was out of town, and we have a question about these sores that are showing up only on the carpet pythons. there are no problems with any other kind of snake, and there are many there. Anyways 3 of his carpet pythons have been getting sores on them none are housed together. the cages are even several feet away from each other. anyone have any clue what is affecting them and why it is only the carpets.

on this one it is just above where his tail leaves the water.

on this one its right in the middle of the body and in the bottom right of the picture

How are the cages being heated, and do all of them have access to large tubs of water like in the first photo? I would avoid using tubs large enough that they can soak in and move toward maintaining a higher ambient humidity instead, if the cage environment appears too dry.

I just finally made it back out there, the cages are heated from above by lamps that are outside the cage and the water dishes in the other cage are stainless bowls about 8 inches across. they have a coconut shell substrate

They reminded me of thermal burns, but if the heat sources are external, it sounds like that is probably not the issue. Excessive soaking in their water bowls or overly high humidity can lead to fungal or bacterial skin issues under certain conditions, but a vet would need to make that determination.
