Keeps 1 eye closed

sweetiesloveme May 11, 2011 01:14 AM

I have a 4 year old bearded dragon in 50 gallon cage with sand. Heat and UV with PowerSun 100 W bulb at about 12 to 15 inches above basking site. She eats well.
2 days ago she started closing her right eye and keeping it closed for extended periods of time. The eyelid is a darker purple than I am used to with her. I have misted her to see if anything would come out and nothing seemed to. Should I be concerned and is there anything that I can do?
Thank you
Ignore picture. Her tail has resolved itself and can just not figure out how to get the picture off.

I would advise you to stop keep the dragon on sand. Use newspaper. Most likely the fine sediment/silt from the sand is causing the issue.

Is the dragon well hydrated? Offer water and gets occasional warm baths? Scrub the eye area lightly with a soft bristle tooth brush.

It might have an eye infection and require solution from a vet or try an eye flush solution over-counter if money is an issue.

good luck

She might have been a little dehydrated so I have started to mist her a few times a day on her head and once just on her body. It seems like she is getting better since the eye is open much more. The eye that was closed seemed be always facing the light.
Thank you so much for the post.

Sand leads to infections or gets in the eye. try flushing with some water or always talk with vet.

I have misted her a lot more and that has seemed to help. Did flush her eye once.
Thank you for the post.
