They're all my pets!

More seriously.. they aren't rare as much as very restricted in habitat and range. Once you spend some time learning how they operate and the visual clues to spotting them it becomes a lot easier.

I think more people not seeing them is due mainly to two things.. #1 it's all walking! no road cruising and absolutely no flipping (hard for many herpers to swallow).. #2 this area is too far away from hot spots for most other targeted Texas herps.

BTW anybody wanting the pro-tour to see this stuff here just drop me a line. I'm happy to oblige.

Thanks.

The consensus of opinion is that Kingsville and even a little south is an intergradation zone with Coluber constrictor flaviventris.

I've also seen them up that way that would pass for oaxaca after only superficial inspection.

As I recall the hatchlings display the difference more clearly.. I'll look for those photos.

Thanks for your reply.

i based my identity on Dixon's Amphibians and Reptiles of TX. I seem to recall that the Mexican racer is in the southern tip of TX and the yellowbelly to the west. Been awhile since i flipped through that book though.
