Cheap, easy BPA-free containers

markg May 13, 2011 02:12 PM

For baby reptiles.

These Glad containers are now BPA free.

I decided to try using a hole saw to cut a hole as shown. Works OK. Debur it just a little.

I cut a piece of aluminum window screen to size to fit in the circular area on the lid. Put a bead of silicon sealant down and laid the screen on it. Used a finger to spread the silicon around the area and seal in the screen edges.

Worked well. Was fast and easy. Using these boxes for hatchling snakes.

Could have easily just poked holes with a soldering iron, but I really like how these turned out, and the amount of ventilation is just about perfect for a hatchling kingsnake.

Does stacking them cover air vent or does the lip lift it a little. I guess a spacer on each end could be used to hold them up a bit. We just got some for normal use and the lids didnt fit after the first time in the dishwasher. VM

Stacking them lightly covers the air vent but still allows some airflow. I only stack when pulling them out of their rack for servicing, cleaning, etc.

Good point about the dishwasher.

I've been using these for the last month or so. Thus far all is well. I thought that the lids would loosen over time, but so far so good, and I open the boxes nearly daily.

Just got the larger size today. Fantastic size, will work out well for growing babies. Not huge kings - graybands and ruthveni. These don't push hard on lids like Florida kings for example.
