Herp guide/trip in San Antonio area

spycspider May 23, 2011 05:09 PM

Hi,

Long time member, but first time poster on this subforum. I would like to know if there is anyone living in the San Antonio, TX area who would be interested in going on a herp hunt some time this month or the next.

My girlfriend and I are medical students in San Antonio and now that I've graduated I would like to explore the surrounding regions with somebody who knows some good locations for herps. My interest is in turtles and snakes especially; however, I'm more than happy to check out other reptiles and amphibians.

Please let me know and perhaps we can get in touch before the summer is over (I start work July).
Thanks!

Johnny

I don't know that I would have time to be a guide, but as hot as it has been around here you will have to mostly stick to roadhunting at night.

If you drive 30 minutes south of the city and drive some quiet country roads, you should have no trouble finding some snakes on the road. If it rains it will be a lot better. Both the southeast, southwest and southern parts of the city are productive.

The roads in the quiet wooded areas east of the city are also good for herps. Again, rain helps.

Flipping trash, etc. around here at this time of year is pretty slow. If we get a big rains storm (i.e. tropical storm), you might find some stuff under trash on a cool morning.

If you want to see a few thousand turtles, you could go to Mitchell Lake Audubon Sanctuary on the south side of town. That place is crawling with Trachemys and softshells.
