Everyones favorite: MITES!

skincity702 May 25, 2011 09:27 AM

Ok so I have had issues before with mites. Got that cleared up and my collection had been mite free for almost a year. I haven't gotten any new animals and I have no idea where they could have come from. Anyone have any ideas? I feed almost exclusively frozen thawed and the snakes that eat live are in a different room upstairs. I have no clue how I could have gotten them again and I already ordered some predatory mites to eat the snake mites. Any help anyone can think if would be great.
Thanks,
-JT

Hites are not fun in any way. And they keep coming back like zombies. I have heard that dormant mite eggs can hatch up until a year later. Also small populations of mites can exist undetected that suddenly explode in an infestation. The live in cycles. New mites can be brought in by a number of ways and they are good at traveling. Loose substrates, especially bark, will harbor mites. Though snake mites are species specific, they will hitch a ride on humans. A trip to a pet shop or reptile show can bring them home. Live rodents can carry them. Any reptile supplies received from a vendor that also sells snakes can add the joy of mites in an order.

The predator mites sound like a wonderful and safe way to rid the mites and are said to be highly effective. I wonder if they eat the eggs also or are thorough in seeking out the eggs. I have used Provent A Mite for many years and later Equate Bedding spray from Walmart, with excellent results, no ill effects, and no mites for years. Either spray will kill all life stages of mites including their eggs. Bill
