Adult Tegu That Seems Constipated / Help

fgs May 26, 2011 12:28 PM

I have a 4 year old male Black and White Tegu that seems constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him move things along.

Also what is the best diet for him in the future that will keep this from happening again.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been through this a couple of times...

A nice warm (not hot) soak tends to help them relax their bowels. Also, depending on how long it's been going on, you could try adding a bit of mineral oil to his food (I've actually had to shoot straight mineral oil in a syringe down a tegu's throat--but that was after a LONG constipation time).

One thing I've noticed about PREVENTING constipation is adding a bit of cod liver oil to their food seems to really help.

How long has it been going on?

I give my Tegus collard greens and PLENTY of veggies and fruit at least every other feeding .Which tends to be twice a week in the spring summer months . I try to give poultry and poultry parts as the main meat source. With rodents being a small part of the diet as per studies done on wild caught stomach contents
